It is doubtful that the network of outposts and more remote healthcare centres would have appeared at all, despite the other action of Estella's workers and the staff at the central Eternal Hospital (then called the Celestial Hospital), were it not for one of the vampires who resided at the Castel dell'Æmoglobina. Ashton Silver Elm Norwood is a mysterious figure, since there is no contemporary information about his appearance or origins and indeed other residents of the Castel in later years reported that even Ash (a nickname) himself did not seem to know or to elude to his past life. Ashton was a forerunner in the early Underlings Union. His name appears in the very first meetings registers. He appears to have gained Estella's blessing by hard work and smooth persuasion to set up the healthcare system in the Quiverwoods alongside the blood donation drives (covered in Chapter 2). Ash's special skills related to the training of the emergency health carriages, as he was Estella's personal chauffeur. He was a role model in the dual role of driver-aid worker. Unfortunately Ash's time came to a premature end, with speculation not covered in this book, but his legacy lived on (more of the contributions of the orphan vocational training scheme in Chapter 3)…
